KOMITMEN UIII and Ministry of Environment Strengthen Regional Climate Adaptation Dialogue

The research team from Kerangka Ekonomi untuk Indonesia Tanggap Iklim Menuju Emisi Nol Bersih (KOMITMEN), Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII), held discussions with the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia on April 27, 2026. The meeting brought together the KOMITMEN UIII team and Irawan Asaad, Ph.D., to discuss climate change adaptation at the regional level.

The dialogue was informed by field studies conducted in four locations: Penajam Paser Utara Regency and Kutai Kartanegara Regency in East Kalimantan, as well as Pekalongan City and Pekalongan Regency in Central Java. These areas reflect diverse climate challenges, ranging from energy transition and mining regions to densely populated coastal zones facing layered ecological pressures.

Field findings show that infrastructure resilience and community livelihoods are the two most affected dimensions across all sites. Climate pressures are reflected not only in physical infrastructure damage and economic loss, but also in the adaptive strategies communities develop to maintain livelihoods and household resilience amid uncertainty.

The discussion resulted in two key directions: the potential for strategic collaboration between KOMITMEN UIII and the Ministry of Environment to strengthen place-based climate adaptation research, and a shared commitment to encourage local governments to translate policy intentions into more concrete and adaptive climate actions.

This meeting reaffirmed KOMITMEN UIII’s position that climate adaptation policy cannot be designed solely from the national level. Regions across Indonesia have distinct knowledge, lived experiences, and vulnerabilities, and effective adaptation policy can only emerge when these local realities are heard and translated into the national policy framework.

KOMITMEN UIII will continue to foster dialogue with ministries, local governments, and communities to ensure that Indonesia’s transition toward climate resilience remains inclusive and grounded in evidence.
